Benfica's calendar runs through two places: the market and Palácio Baldaya. Add a renovated neighbourhood cinema, Lisbon's biggest forest park at the edge of the parish and a stadium a short trip away. Here's what's worth knowing, from closest to furthest from our Benfica residence.

Mercado de Benfica

The Mercado de Benfica (Rua João Frederico Ludovice, about 8 min) is one of Lisbon's big traditional markets: 2,800 m² and more than 200 stalls of fish, meat, fruit and vegetables, bread and regional products such as cheese from the Beiras and honey, plus an outdoor clothes and household market and cafés inside. It reopened on 4 September 2026 after a summer renovation, with the same stalls. It's open Tuesday to Thursday from 07:00 to 14:00, and Friday and Saturday from 07:00 to 15:00. It's closed on Mondays. Mornings are when it's most alive.

Palácio Baldaya

Palácio Baldaya (Estrada de Benfica 701A, about 11 min) is a restored palace that the parish runs as Benfica's cultural centre: exhibitions, concerts, workshops and fairs, many of them free. Fixtures to look out for are the Feira Nacional do Vinil (records, cassettes and DJ sets, free entry, several weekends a year), free anniversary concerts in late August or early September, and a 25 de Abril programme every April. In November 2026 the parish agenda lists a craft fair on Saturday 14 November and a vinyl fair on Saturday 28 November, both from 10:00 to 18:00. The full programme is on the parish agenda.

Cine-Teatro Turim (Estrada de Benfica 723, about 10 min) is a neighbourhood cinema and theatre that reopened in September 2023 after a full renovation. It programmes films, theatre, dance, music and stand-up. In November 2026 there are Monday sessions at 19:30 and children's films on Sundays at 11:00. The box office opens 90 minutes before each show.

Green space

  • •Mata de Benfica (Parque Silva Porto) (about 5 min): the closest park, with about 1,200 m of walking and running path resurfaced in 2025. It's open every day from 07:00, closing at 19:00 in winter and 22:00 in summer.
  • •Monsanto Forest Park (the park boundary is about 12 min away): Lisbon's largest green space, with forest trails, running and mountain-bike routes, fitness circuits and the Keil do Amaral amphitheatre. Free and open around the clock. Its birthday on 1 November usually brings free activities.

A short trip away

  • •Estádio da Luz and Museu Benfica (about 30 min on foot, metro Colégio Militar/Luz): SL Benfica's home ground. The club museum and self-guided stadium tours run outside match times, with tours every 20 minutes from 10:00 to 15:00. The museum closes on days the men's team plays at home.
  • •Centro Colombo (about 30 min on foot, same metro): more than 340 shops and 60 restaurants, cinemas including IMAX, and bowling. Open every day from 08:00 to midnight.
  • •Feira da Luz (Largo da Luz, Carnide): a month-long traditional fair with stalls, food trucks and evening concerts. It runs from late August to late September (29 August to 27 September in 2026).

Getting around: the nearest rail from our residence is the Sintra line, with Santa Cruz-Damaia and Benfica stations about 10 minutes away on foot. For food and coffee, see where to eat in Benfica and cafés and places to work in Benfica.
