Our Santos residence sits between Largo do Conde Barão and Santos, with the old fishing quarter of Madragoa just west and Cais do Sodré a short walk east. That means proper tascas, all-day cafés and a lot of places open late. Everything was checked against recent reviews and listings in November 2026.
Around the corner
- •Neighbourhood Café (Largo do Conde Barão 25, about 1 min): an all-day café for brunch plates, breakfast burritos and smash burgers, with local craft beer. Vegan and gluten-free options. Every day, 08:30 to 23:00; no reservations.
- •Salón de Lisboa (Rua Cais do Tojo 28, about 1 min): a wine bistro opened in late 2025 by an Argentine chef, with short-menu plates made for sharing and around 100 mostly Portuguese and natural wines. At opening, mains were €12 to €16. Good for a nicer night out.
Madragoa tascas
- •Varina da Madragoa (Rua das Madres 34, about 3 min): a tasca since 1967 that reopened in May 2026 under a young chef who wants to keep it a real tasca. Order the bacalhau à Brás or the pataniscas; NiT put the average at €10 to €20. Dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday. Opening times changed after the reopening, so check.
- •O Tachadas (Rua da Esperança 176, about 6 min): a grill known for its bife A4, which Time Out calls a monumental cut served on the board. Share it. Lunch and dinner Tuesday to Sunday, closed Monday.
Cheap and late
- •A Merendeira (Avenida 24 de Julho 54, about 3 min): a Santos institution for pão com chouriço and caldo verde, to a 1972 recipe. The set menu adds a drink and arroz doce. Open every day from 09:00 until 07:00 the next morning, so it's where the night ends.
- •PZA Pizza alla Pala (Rua de São Paulo 37, about 12 min): Roman-style pizza by the slice, the half or the whole, about 20 recipes. Mostly evenings, until 02:00 Thursday to Sunday.
- •Café Janis (Rua da Moeda 1A, about 7 min): an all-day café with a strong vegetarian side: shakshuka with goat's cheese, a vegan bowl, avocado toast and matcha. Every day, 08:00 to 00:30.
The food hall and a treat
- •Time Out Market (Mercado da Ribeira, about 10 min): restaurants and kiosks from well-known chefs under one roof, in half of the 1882 market building. Easy when friends can't agree. Every day from 10:00 to midnight, later on some weekend nights.
- •Café de São Bento (Rua de São Bento 212, about 9 min, uphill): since 1982 the place for steak in Marrare sauce, opposite Parliament; ring the bell at the green door. The signature steak is about €27 and there's a €25 executive lunch, so save it for a birthday or visiting parents.
