Saldanha is full of offices, so it's well set up for a coffee and a few hours on the laptop. Here's a mix of specialty cafés, a historic pastelaria and a free library. Walking times are from our Saldanha residence.

Specialty coffee you can work from

  • •SOLO Brewing Coffee (Rua Pinheiro Chagas 16B, about 11 min): a roastery-café founded in Recife, Brazil, named best coffee roaster in Portugal at Porto Coffee Week 2025. Beans from Colombia, Kenya and Mexico, plus brunch and lunch. Listed as laptop-friendly with free Wi-Fi. Listings disagree on Wednesdays, so check.
  • •LENA (Avenida António Augusto de Aguiar 86, about 13 min): specialty coffee and all-day brunch, with long tables and power sockets for laptops and free Wi-Fi. Try the choco-matcha or a seasonal cappuccino. Every day, 09:00 to 17:00.

  • •Pastelaria Versailles (Avenida da República 15A, about 14 min): opened in 1922 as one of the first cafés of the Avenidas Novas, with its art nouveau mirrors, marble and woodwork largely intact. Have a bica and a pastel de nata, or the thick hot chocolate. At Christmas, Lisbon queues here for bolo-rei. Every day, 07:15 to 22:00. Great for a break, less so for a laptop.
  • •Manteigaria Saldanha (Avenida Duque d'Ávila 32, about 13 min): the well-known pastel de nata maker bakes on site, and you can watch through the window. Eat at the counter or on the terrace, or take a box home. 08:00 to 21:00.

For free, or for a proper desk

  • •Biblioteca de São Lázaro (Rua do Saco 1, about 15 min): Lisbon's oldest public library, founded in 1883, with a hexagonal reading hall. Everything is free, including the reader card and internet access. Monday to Saturday, 11:00 to 19:00 with a lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00; on the last Wednesday of the month it opens at 14:00.
  • •Avila Spaces, Atrium Saldanha (Praça Duque de Saldanha 1, about 9 min): co-working right above Saldanha metro. A day pass is €50 plus VAT, so it's for the odd important day, not every day. Weekdays 08:00 to 20:00.
