Markets and events in Arroios, Lisbon

The Mercado de Arroios and its restaurants, a 19th-century garden with a burger kiosk, the neighbourhood's own June street party and free library events: what's on near our Arroios residence.

Arroios isn't a sightseeing neighbourhood. Life happens in its market, its garden and its streets, especially in June. Here's what's worth knowing near our residence on Rua Morais Soares.

Mercado de Arroios

The Mercado de Arroios (Rua Ângela Pinto, about 8 min) opened in 1942 and reopened fully restored in 2017. The fresh stalls trade in the mornings, Monday to Saturday from about 07:00 to 14:00 according to its listing (we couldn't find an official schedule, so check). The building is also a food hub: Mezze (Syrian) and Pequeno Café e Bistrô (vegan) trade inside and keep longer hours, and Taberna Os Papagaios is next door. The parish also holds occasional community markets of makers and small producers here, as it did in December 2025 and March 2026.

Jardim Constantino

Jardim Constantino (about 12 min) is a late-19th-century garden with a playground, a stone Prometheus placed in 1925 and a melaleuca tree classified of public interest, the only one of its kind in the city. The Mustarda kiosk does burgers on a terrace, every day from 10:00 to midnight. The garden is open around the clock, and the parish uses it for free events, such as a family morning in late August.

June: the Arraial de Arroios

During the Santos Populares, Arroios throws its own street party on Rua de Arroios (about 12 min). The Clube Atlético de Arroios brought it back in 2012, after decades without one. Expect grilled sardines, bifanas, beer, live acts and DJs, all free to enter. In 2026 it ran on 3, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 12 June; the dates change every year, so watch Time Out's listing.

Free events and workshops

  • •Biblioteca da Penha de França (about 10 min): the municipal library runs a free programme of reading meetings, a children's autumn reading series and a long-running neighbourhood memory project. Dates are on the BLX agenda.
  • •Mezze cooking workshops (Mercado de Arroios): learn hummus, baba ganoush and other dishes from the Syrian kitchen's cooks, ending with a shared meal. Book on request through their site.

The Alameda, its Fonte Luminosa and Parque da Bela Vista are just beyond Arroios; see markets and events in Olaias. For food and coffee, see where to eat in Arroios and cafés and places to work in Arroios.
